RE: boondocking at glacier NP

I had a really hard time last year finding nice boondocking close to Glacier. Hungry Horse had some smaller spots but that was too far for my requirements.
Eventually we stayed on a nice open tree-ringed snowmobile parking lot (the gate was open) but we were asked to move after a couple of days.
The only other option that I am aware of is a spot right next to the river, but unfortunately also right next to the road.

My favorite cg camp spots from the last 2 years would be:
1) Goodale BLM cg in the Owens Valley, CA
2) Natural Bridge at Crater Lake, OR
3) Emarald Bay State Park at Lake Tahoe, CA
4) Grosse Ventre at Jackson, WY
5) Clear Creek at Golden, CO

RE: Smoke in the Sky

I have been chased around by fires the whole of last summer. It started early around the end of June in the Ashley National Forest in UT. Here is the view from my campsite with very threatening smoke clouds. I called the ranger and it turned out this fire was more than 20 miles away.
Later in Sun Valley, ID we got evacuated after the Ketchum fire started moving north. The evacuation had more to do with preventing us from being in the way of the fire control logistics. Sun Valley Picture

RE: Irvine, CA

If it is available then the Fair Grounds will be a very good option. The same distance from UCI as The Newport Dunes but much more affordable. Last time I paid around $30 a night for full hookups and in some ways it is a nicer campground than the Dunes. I don't think you can reserve and they sometimes have events that will close the camping down for a little while.

RE: Campgrounds Between Hoback Jct and Riverton WY

Thanks for the information. We drove through Gros Ventre last September - second week and it was packed, side by side with units. Some of the loops looked tight. Any loop you would particularly recommend for those of us with generators (we have a Honda 2000 - quiet one)?
All the loops look tight at first but you should be able get around with almost any size rig. Sorry for sounding so generator averse ;) (but it is difficult to imagine living with the noise and inconvenience after 2 years of solar)

RE: Leaving for colorado in 8 days ,,free camp, recomendations?

You can try this area which is close to Deckers althought that might be a bit out of your way. A better option which looks like it might be right on your route is: close to Leadville

RE: Secluded and with fish, Sierras?

I am currently camped in a very secluded spot close to the Owens Gorge. There is great fishing less than a mile from here.

Jackson is great place to be in August. I found
Grosse Ventre campground very convenient and quite affordable.
Also, a great place to camp close to Lander, WY:

Stayed on this spot for a night or two in May 2006 (just outside of Cave Lake State Park and pretty close to Ely)
